Dakhleh is a remote oasis in Egypt's western desert located approximately 250 kilometres west of Luxor and 150 kilometres from Kharga Oasis.

The Dakhleh Oasis Project was formed in 1978 as a study of the whole Dakhleh Oasis as a region, primarily with the aim of coming to an understanding of the relationship between human activity and environmental change.

The Deben was a gold ring and was the closest to actual currency that was used until coins were introduced during the Persian Period.

Home to generations of New Kingdom workers who built and furnished the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The walled hamlet’s one entrance leads to the main street and the alleys running from it, where some 70 houses are lined up in neat rows. Outside the walls are the chapels and tombs of the villagers.

It is believed that the Djed is a rendering of a human backbone. It represents stability and strength. It was originally associated with the creation god Ptah. Himself being called the "Noble Djed". As the Osiris cults took hold it became known as the backbone of Osiris . A djed column is often painted on the bottom of coffins, where the backbone of the deceased would lay, this identified the person with the king of the underworld, Osiris. It also acts as a sign of stability for the deceased's journey into the afterlife.
